CoolSculpting®

Dr. Comeau is pleased to offer CoolSculpting, the world’s leading non-invasive fat reduction treatment. People across the globe have seen amazing results with no surgery and also no downtime. In fact, millions of treatments have been performed worldwide.

Treatable areas for CoolSculpting

  • Stomach
  • Flanks (love handles)
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Arms
  • Under the chin
  • Bra fat

CoolSculpting uses patented technology to target and kill fat cells. Patients may begin to see the results of their treatment(s) within just a few weeks. CoolSculpting can be used to treat a wide variety of areas.

Why Choose CoolScuplting?

Our patients tell us that they choose CoolSculpting for several reasons. First, it is a non-invasive way to reduce stubborn fat. Unlike liposuction, CoolSculpting does not require anesthesia of any kind. Our patients say that outside of feeling a cooling sensation, they do not experience discomfort during treatments.

In addition to it being non-invasive, CoolSculpting treatments take as little as one hour, and you can go back to your normal routine immediately. Getting rid of unwanted fat on your lunch break – it’s possible! Again, unlike liposuction, there is no downtime. Depending on the area(s) that are treated and the amount of fat that you are looking to reduce, noticeable fat loss can happen in as little as just one treatment.

Because CoolSculpting freezes fat cells, the fat lost after treatments is gone FOREVER! Frozen fat cells die, and are eliminated naturally through the body, meaning they are lost and gone for good.

Are You a Candidate?

CoolSculpting is ideal for treating problem areas of fat that diet and exercise just don’t seem to fix. Dr. Beth Comeau meets with each of her patients to discuss their individual fat reduction needs, and develops a treatment plan.

No Surgery. No Downtime.

The procedure is performed in Dr. Comeau’s office in Columbia / Ellicott City, MD. Treatments usually take less than one hour. During the treatment, patients can relax, read, even sleep. Afterward, they can return to their normal routine and most importantly, go back to work, run errands, or even go to the gym.

The Popsicle Connection

Some years ago, doctors Dieter Manstein, MD and R. Rox Anderson, MD at Harvard University noticed that some children who ate popsicles got dimples in their cheeks. They realized that the frozen popsicles were actually freezing fat cells in the cheeks. That discovery eventually lead to the development of cryolipolysis, otherwise known as CoolSculpting – the fat freezing technology that we see today.

The controlled cooling technology delivered by the CoolSculpting fat freezing device expertly targets fat cells without damaging the surrounding skin. Much like what popsicles did for cheek dimples, the fat beneath the skin’s surface freezes and is eliminated, and the skin remains happy and healthy!

How Does CoolSculpting Work ?

We will explain the who what where when and why of CoolSculpting!

The Popsicle CoolSculpting Connection

At Harvard University, scientists Dieter Manstein, MD and R. Rox Anderson, MD, noticed that some children who ate popsicles developed dimples in their cheeks. They came to realize that the popsicles were freezing pockets of fat cells in their cheeks, and those fat cells went away.

This discovery was the insight into cryolipolyis – the science on which CoolSculpting is based.

Freezing Away Stubborn Fat

During the procedure, controlled cooling is used to safely and effectively target fat cells beneath the skin. These fat cells become crystalized, then die. Your body then naturally processes and eliminates these dead cells. The result – permanent elimination of stubborn fat!

What Happens to Fat After CoolSculpting

Once fat cells die, they are eliminated through the body naturally. These cells never return. Results are permanent! Any untreated areas will remain as they were prior to the CoolSculpting procedure.

What to Expect During Your Procedure

CoolSculpting is highly effective in treating a number of areas of the body. Treatable areas include: stomach, flanks (love handles), double chin, upper arms, back (bra fat), outer thighs and inner thighs. If you are considering getting CoolSculpting, you will want to know what to expect.

What to Expect with CoolSculpting

The Initial CoolSculpting Consultation

Dr. Comeau and staff will meet with you one-on-one for your initial consultation. They will review what type of fat loss you’re looking for to help re-shape your body. During the process, together, you will look at your body from various angles, focusing on the specific areas in which you’re interested in losing fat.

Everyone has a different body shape. For that reason, CoolSculpting has developed a variety of applicators to accommodate as many areas as possible. During your initial consultation, we’ll take a look at the CoolSculpting machine and applicators, and Dr. Comeau and her staff will explain how they work to eliminate stubborn fat.

Depending on your body type and the fat loss you’re looking for, Dr. Comeau will recommend the number of treatments you will need. In many cases, desired fat loss is achieved in just on treatment!

CoolSculpting Treatment Day

When you arrive for your CoolSculpting treatment, a staff member will review the procedure and how long it will take. Then, “before” photos are taken so that you and Dr. Comeau will be able to tell how successful your first treatment is. Don’t worry – we’ll only photograph the treatment area, and will never use your photo without prior consent.

One the photos are taken, a member of Dr. Comeau’s staff will mark the area to be treated so that we can properly fit the applicator. You will then be escorted to the treatment room, where you will be comfortably positioned for treatment. You’ll even have the option to watch television or close your eyes for a rest during treatment!

Once you are in position and comfortable, a gel pad and applicator will be positioned in the target area. It is the CoolSculpting applicator that delivers the magic – targeted, permanent fat loss!

The Treatment is Complete – Now What?

CoolSculpting is non-invasive, and there is no downtime. You can resume all normal activities immediately following treatment. Go back to work, get the kids, head home, go to the gym – it’s up to you! The treatment area may feel numb for a while, however that should not impact your normal activities.

When Will I See Results?

Patients have reported seeing results as early as 3 weeks. Full results are generally seen between 4 and 12 weeks.

Does CoolSculpting Hurt?

As the name implies, CoolSculpting is cool! You will feel a chilly sensation in the treatment area as the applicator reaches its ‘freezing’ point. That sensation usually goes away in 10 or 15 minutes, and the treatment area will become numb. During treatment, we offer blankets and slippers to help keep you warm. The CoolSculpting applicator uses a vacuum to draw the fatty area into the applicator cup. You may feel some slight tugging or pulling, which should not be painful.

What Do I Do During My Treatment?

Relax! You will need to keep still during treatment so as not to dislocate the applicator. Most patients bring their cell phones to check e-mail or play games. We also have Netflix available, so you can catch up on a favorite show. Or simply close your eyes and take the opportunity to catch up on some rest.

Can I Expect Any Side Effects?

Immediately following treatment, the area(s) treated will likely feel numb. This will subside, and the area may become red, show some signs of swelling, and may feel tingly, itchy or tender. If you had a double chin treatment, you may experience a sensation of fullness in the back of your throat. All of these side effects are temporary, and should resolve themselves within a few days or up to a week or two. Consult the CoolSculpting website for more information on side effects.

CoolSculpting FAQs

How Do I Know if CoolSculpting Is Right For Me?

CoolSculpting was designed to target stubborn fat in targeted areas. The procedure was not designed for weight loss. While you will lose fat cells with CoolSculpting, you may not see weight loss. If you are unhappy with certain areas of your body, CoolSculpting may be right for you. To know for sure, schedule a consultation with Dr. Beth Comeau.

How Much Does the Procedure Cost?

Costs for CoolSculpting vary depending on areas of treatment, as well as the number of treatments needed. Many patients opt for more than one area, such as both arms or thighs, and flanks. Each area requires a separate treatment. To get a comprehensive price for the areas you wanted treated, schedule a consultation today.

How Long Does a Treatment Take?

Depending on the area treated, the Cool Sculpting procedure generally takes between 35 and 60 minutes. The procedure is non-invasive and does not require any post-treatment downtime. If you are having more than one area treated, your provider will let you know how long each treatment will take and how long you can expect to be at their office.

Can I Get CoolSculpting Anywhere on My Body?
In the United States, CoolSculpting is FDA cleared for the treatment of fat bulges in the submental area (double chin), thighs (inner and outer), abdomen, flanks (love handles), bra (back) fat, upper arms, and under the buttocks (known as banana roll).
After the Procedure, Where Does the Fat Go?

During your treatment, fat cells are targeted with freezing technology. Once crystalized, the fat cells will die. Once they are no longer viable, these dead fat cells are naturally eliminated from the body. For more on the fat-freezing process, click here.

What Does the Procedure Feel Like? Does It Hurt?

During the first few minutes of your CoolSculpting treatment, you may feel a mild to intense cold sensation. This feeling soon subsides. Because the applicator acts like a vacuum to hold the fatty area in place, you may feel some pulling. The area being treated usually goes numb in about 5 to 10 minutes. Most patients are quite comfortable during treatment, and use the time to read, catch up on e-mail, watch television, or close their eyes and relax.

Once the treatment is complete, your provider will massage the treated area for 2-3 minutes. Because Cool Sculpting is non-invasive, you can return to all of your normal activities immediately following treatment. For more information on what you can expect, click here.

Is It Safe?
CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared for treating visible fat bulges in several areas of the body. For complete safety information, visit the official website here: Coolsculpting.com

Persons suffering from cryoglobulinemia, paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria, or cold agglutinin disease should not have the procedure. CoolSculpting is not designed to treat obesity. To know for sure if you are a good candidate, consult your certified provider.

What Side Effects Can I Expect with CoolSculpting?
During treatments, you may feel a cool sensation that turns numb within 5 to 10 minutes. You may also feel some tugging at the application site. After the procedure, you may experience some temporary side effects such as redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, blanching, tingling or stinging, tenderness, aching, cramping, sensitivity, or itching. If you have a CoolSculpting treatment for double chin, you may experience a fullness in the back of your throat. All of these side effects can last from a few days to a few weeks after treatment. Ask your provider about these and any other side effects reported by their patients.
Do I Need to Plan for Down Time?
No! CoolSculpting is non-invasive. You are free to return to all normal activities immediately after your treatment. Many of our patients do their Cool Sculpting treatments during their lunch breaks, and go right back to work afterward.
My Treatment is Done. Now What?
As noted above, there are no special requirements after your CoolSculpting procedure. You can resume all normal activities. In the coming weeks, you can expect to begin seeing the results of your treatment. Typically, between 4 and 6 weeks, you will notice that the fat from the treated area(s) is being eliminated. Full results are generally seen after about 8 weeks.
Do I Need to Diet or Take Any Supplements After My Treatment?
While it is always advisable to follow a healthy, sensible diet, no special diet or supplements are needed following CoolSculpting. Many of our patients feel more motivated to improve their diet and exercise after their treatments. After all, when you do something nice for yourself, you want that feeling to continue!
What if I Gain Weight After CoolSculpting?
Fat loss through CoolSculpting is permanent, however it only affects the treated area. Should you gain weight after your treatment, you will likely see more fat increase in untreated areas.
Will My Insurance Pay for CoolSculpting?

Because CoolSculpting is an elective procedure (not a medical one), it will likely not be covered by your insurance. Financing may be available. Ask your provider for information.
